The Editing Process

in our most recent media lesson we spent our time editing our preliminary exercise. we used a professional editing software called 'Final Cut Pro'. before this lesson we were taught the simple editing skills and what things are and what the functions on some tools were on the program.

the first thing we had to do is connect our camera to the mac. we then had to import our footage onto iMovie because this program cut the footage into sections which makes it easier for us to edit it. while capturing the footage we encountered some problems as it rapidly went through and it did not capture properly. after fiddling with it for a while we managed to capture the footage correctly.

Georgina was our editor and she took control of the role but we closely watched her and we supported her and helped her throughout the process. she firstly imported the image from iMovie to Final Cut Pro and chose the clips that we needed for our final edit. she then put the clips in the timeline and she cut the bits that we did not need. Georgina found this easy as she had previously done this in her time at secondary school.

we used several of shots in our preliminary exercise.

the first shot we use was the 'Point of View Shot'. this was Jessie walking into the interview

the second shot we used was the 'Over the Shoulder Shot'. this shows Jessie (Georgina) talking to Bob (Niel)

we used the same shot but this time it was over Bob's (Niel) shoulder looking over to Jessie (Georgina)

this is a 'Long Two Shot' of the two characters

this is a 'Close-Up Shot'. we done this shot to emphasise the hand shake.

this is a 'Long Shot' of Zainab walking down a hall way.

this was our final shot and it was a 'Wide Shot'. this was done to show match on action.

here are some images of some of the tools we used on Final Cut Pro.
this is the timeline. we use this to cut the clips and to add titles. we also use this to get the sync correct and the timing.

this is all our clips shown on Final Cut Pro. we drag the clips from here onto the timeline to start editing.

this is the main toolbar. for our preliminary task we used the dragging tool to move the clips onto the timeline and we used the knife tool to cut the clips.

  1. A useful post Abderahim. This is only a basic description of the technology you used, and you admit you were mostly a spectator, but it shows you have learned your way around the Final Cut layout. Level 2-

The best thing about this is that you have used the ability to upload images to the blog, so it is very clear what you are talking about. You could go one better next time and add arrows or circles to highlight specific tools/clips. There is one image missing though - the first one. Level 2+

  3. Zainab, you raise a valid point. This is in fact though, not copied word for word (although it is image for image) but shows that Abderahim has tried to make sense of it for himself. It is important that you learn from each other in teamwork, but equally important is that you don't just lean on the leader of your team. Abderahim, remember you can ask your teachers for help too - that's what we're here for.
